The most common symptoms of swimmer’s ear are moderate to severe pain and itch. Typically the pain associated with AOE can be so intense that patients may not want their infected ear touched for fear of the pain increasing.
Swimmer’s ear occurs when bacteria grow in the ear canal. The sensitive skin of the ear canal is protected by a thin layer of cerumen, commonly known as earwax. When this protective layer of earwax becomes compromised, infection can occur.
Once the infection starts to grow, the ear canal can become inflamed. Inflammation of the ear canal causes the infected ear to feel itchy, and the patient will typically experience varying levels of pain. The pain associated with acute otitis externa can last 4 to 7 days, depending on the severity of infection. Effectively managing the pain is a priority so that the patient can rest comfortably as the infection is being resolved.
There are three goals when treating AOE which are supported by the most recent physician clinical practice guidelines:
- Relieve pain
- Eradicate the infection
- Restore the lining of the external ear canal
Zinotic is the only family of products that effectively achieves all three goals
of
acute otitis externa treatment with one simple solution.
